Former presidential candidate and prominent statesman Peter Obi was in Benin City, Edo State today to attend the book presentation ceremony of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the renowned Esama of Benin—a title traditionally translating to “son of the people” and held by a respected figure who supports social causes in the Benin Kingdom.
In his speech, Obi praised the Esama’s impactful philanthropy in education, healthcare, and community development. He welcomed the new publication as a valuable record of the Esama’s legacy and contributions to Edo State and beyond.
The event was attended by dignitaries including local chiefs, leaders from business and education sectors, civil society members, and many supporters. It featured readings from the book, reflections on the Esama’s decades-long service, and interactive discussions celebrating his role in Benin’s socio-cultural development.
Obi reportedly stressed the importance of documenting the stories of national champions, and reaffirmed his belief in honoring local leadership and culture through storytelling and investment.
Following the presentation, Obi participated in a brief photo session and mingled with guests, reaffirming ties with Edo State stakeholders.
