Lagos Murtala Mohammed International Airport – Terminal One to Undergo Major Renovation, Says Keyamo

The Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Terminal One, one of Nigeria’s busiest and most iconic gateways, is set for a massive 22-month renovation, according to Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

The project, announced officially today, will cost a staggering ₦712 billion and is aimed at transforming the aging terminal into a world-class facility that meets global standards for safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort.

“This is not just a facelift—it is a full overhaul,” said Keyamo during a press briefing in Lagos. “We are committed to making MMIA Terminal One a true symbol of Nigeria’s aviation future.”

Project Highlights:

  • Duration: 22 months (Expected completion by mid-2027)

  • Cost: ₦712 billion (~$520 million USD)

  • Scope: Structural upgrades, improved baggage handling systems, expanded immigration counters, modernized departure lounges, improved air conditioning, and tech-driven security systems.

Keyamo emphasized that the project will be executed in phases to minimize disruption to travelers and operations. Temporary terminals and additional staff will be deployed to manage traffic and ensure safety during the renovation.

The renovation is part of a broader aviation modernization plan under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, aimed at positioning Nigeria as a central hub for West African air travel.

The announcement has been met with mixed reactions from the public—some praising the long-overdue upgrade, while others express concern about cost transparency and effective project execution.

Airline operators and industry stakeholders are optimistic but watching closely.

More updates are expected as work begins in the coming weeks. Travelers are advised to monitor flight schedules and arrive early during the renovation period.
