A group of Nigerian youths has gathered in front of the GTBank branch in Area 3, Abuja, to protest the recent arrest of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
The protest follows allegations that VDM was detained after raising concerns about unauthorized deductions from his mother's salary account at the bank.According to reports, VDM was arrested by operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), allegedly in connection with a complaint filed by actress Tonto Dikeh. The EFCC has not publicly commented on the matter.
In response to the arrest, VDM's elder brother, Mark Vincent Otse, has announced plans for a unique form of protest. Instead of a traditional street demonstration, he and other supporters intend to withdraw all their funds from GTBank as a symbolic gesture of dissent. Mark Otse stated, "We won't be carrying placards or blocking roads. I am going to make sure every member of my family and VDM's fans withdraw their money from your bank." The protest is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 5, 2025, at the GTBank Area 3 branch in Abuja.
The protest has garnered significant attention on social media, with the hashtag #FreeVeryDarkMan trending across various platforms. Supporters are calling for VDM's immediate release and for greater accountability in the banking sector.
As the protest unfolds, authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure public safety and prevent any potential disruptions.
