Nigerian Navy Rescues 250 Passengers from Capsized Boat in Rivers State

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder has successfully rescued over 250 individuals, including children, following the capsizing of a commercial boat along the Buguma waterways in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident occurred on the night of April 28, 2024, when the cargo boat, MV Precious Emmanuel, was en route from Sangana in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State to Nembe Jetty in Port Harcourt. The vessel, overloaded with goods such as baskets of smoked fish, crayfish, bunches of plantains, and crates of alcoholic beverages, collided with a wreck around 10:30 p.m., causing it to capsize.

Upon receiving a distress call, NNS Pathfinder mobilized personnel to the scene. Despite the absence of life jackets among the passengers, the Navy deployed life-saving equipment and conducted a thorough search and rescue operation. Remarkably, no casualties were reported.

Commodore Desmond Igbo, Commander of NNS Pathfinder, commended the swift response of his team and emphasized the importance of adhering to safety measures, particularly the use of life jackets. He noted, "Immediately the incident happened, our men were deployed for search and rescue. To the glory of God and the quick response of our men, no casualty was recorded and none of them was even injured."

The Nigerian Navy has reiterated the need for boat operators and passengers to prioritize safety by wearing life jackets and adhering to maritime regulations. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities present in Nigeria's waterways and the critical importance of safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

The Nigerian Navy continues to monitor the situation and collaborate with relevant authorities to enhance safety protocols on the nation's waterways.
