Koko Pee Blasts EFCC Over Continued Detention of VeryDarkMan Without Explanation

Nigerian  activist Koko Pee has called out the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the prolonged detention of social critic VeryDarkMan (VDM), who has now spent over three days in EFCC custody without a public statement or formal charge.

In a strongly worded message shared on social media, Koko Pee expressed outrage at what he described as “unprofessional conduct” by the anti-graft agency.

EFCC holding VeryDarkMan in your cell for 3 days without telling us why you arrested him is unprofessional. You have had days with his phone after collecting his password from his hand. Why haven’t you released an official report?” he wrote.

Koko Pee also declared his intention to visit the EFCC office in person, stating he would not be intimidated by the threat of arrest:

I am coming to your office today. I am not scared of your arrest.

The EFCC has faced growing criticism for its silence since VDM’s arrest, particularly from civil society groups, entertainers, and human rights advocates who demand transparency and due process.

VDM, known for his outspoken activism against corruption and abuse of power, was picked up earlier this week under unclear circumstances. While there are unverified claims that his arrest is linked to his public feud with gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, no official charges have been confirmed.

Koko Pee’s statement adds to mounting pressure on the EFCC to either release VeryDarkMan or present clear legal grounds for his continued detention. Legal experts have reminded the agency that detaining a suspect without charge beyond 48 hours may be in violation of the Nigerian Constitution unless a court order is obtained.

As of this report, the EFCC has yet to issue a response.
