The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated the power and responsibility that rests with the Nigerian electorate, emphasizing that citizens have the full capacity to vote out underperforming elected officials during elections.
In a statement issued during a civic engagement forum, INEC officials encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope in the electoral process, urging them to make their voices heard through the ballot box rather than apathy or online criticism.
“The power of change lies in your hands. Nigerians have the capacity to vote out underperforming leaders at the polls,” an INEC spokesperson said.
This assurance comes amid growing frustration over governance, rising cost of living, insecurity, and youth unemployment. Many Nigerians, particularly the younger generation, have increasingly turned to social media to express dissatisfaction with the political class.
INEC urged the public to actively participate in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to electoral transparency, promising improvements in electronic transmission of results, voter education, and better enforcement of campaign finance regulations.
As Nigeria’s democracy matures, INEC’s message seeks to remind citizens that lasting change begins with informed participation and the responsible use of the ballot.
