Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has expressed concerns regarding the resurgence of some repentant Boko Haram insurgents who, after undergoing rehabilitation and reintegration programs, have reportedly returned to insurgent activities.
Governor Zulum stated,
“While many of the repentant insurgents have genuinely embraced peace, we are aware that some have unfortunately returned to their former ways. This is a matter of grave concern for the state and the nation.”
The governor emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and support for reintegrated individuals to ensure they do not revert to violence.
In response to these developments, the state government is collaborating with federal security agencies to strengthen oversight mechanisms and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for former insurgents to deter recidivism.
Governor Zulum reiterated the commitment of the Borno State Government to peacebuilding efforts while acknowledging the challenges posed by a minority of individuals who undermine these initiatives.
The situation underscores the complexities involved in rehabilitating and reintegrating former combatants into society and the ongoing need for comprehensive strategies to address insurgency in the region.
