Governor Uba Sani Advocates for State Police Amid Nationwide Support

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has emphasized that the establishment of state police is an idea whose time has come, highlighting that 36 states have submitted reports backing its creation.

Speaking after the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Sani stated, "Thirty-five states have agreed to the creation of state police." He noted that virtually every state faces unique security challenges and that the current federal police force lacks the personnel to adequately address these issues across the country.

The NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, discussed the progress of the state police initiative. While 36 states have submitted their proposals, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has yet to do so. The council decided to defer further discussions until the next meeting, scheduled for January 2025, to allow for additional stakeholder engagement and the preparation of a comprehensive report by the NEC secretariat.

Governor Sani reiterated that the establishment of state police is crucial for addressing the country's security challenges. He pointed out that many states have ungoverned territories and a shortage of security personnel, making it difficult for federal agencies to effectively maintain law and order. He also commended federal lawmakers for their contributions to the ongoing reforms aimed at decentralizing Nigeria's security apparatus.

The push for state police comes amid rising concerns over insecurity in various parts of Nigeria, including Kaduna State, which has experienced incidents of banditry and other criminal activities. Governor Sani's administration has already taken steps to bolster security by procuring 150 patrol vehicles and 500 motorcycles for distribution to security agencies.

As the NEC prepares for further deliberations in January, the widespread support among state governors suggests a growing consensus on the need to establish state police as a means of enhancing security and governance at the local level.
