Fulani Groups Call for Unity, Urge Youths to Embrace Skill Acquisition and Peaceful Coexistence

 In a move aimed at fostering peace and national development, several Fulani socio-cultural organizations have called on Fulani youth across Nigeria to shun violence, embrace unity, and focus on acquiring productive skills that will empower them and contribute positively to the country.

The appeal was made during a conference held in Abuja, where community leaders, youth representatives, and development partners gathered to address growing concerns about the image and challenges facing Fulani communities, particularly in relation to security and economic marginalization.

“We must change the narrative,” said Alhaji Bello Lamido, one of the conveners. “Our youth must begin to see themselves as builders of peace, not perpetrators of conflict. The future of the Fulani people depends on how well we invest in education, skills, and responsible leadership.”

Speakers at the event acknowledged that the Fulani have been negatively stereotyped in national discourse due to the activities of a minority involved in banditry and rural violence. However, they insisted that the majority of Fulani people are peaceful, law-abiding citizens who want the same opportunities for education, safety, and prosperity.

As part of the resolution, the groups pledged to:

  • Launch youth skill acquisition programmes in agriculture, technology, and vocational trades;

  • Partner with NGOs and government agencies to provide scholarships and mentorship;

  • Promote inter-ethnic dialogue aimed at healing divisions and reducing tension across communities.

Participants also appealed to the federal government to ensure fair political representation and inclusive economic policies that reach pastoralist communities who have historically been underserved in development initiatives.

“We are Nigerians. We want peace. We want inclusion. We want progress  not profiling,” said Amina Bature, a Fulani youth advocate from Zamfara.

The event was praised by civil society organizations and community leaders across different regions, who described it as a timely and responsible effort to reshape perceptions and promote unity at a time of growing ethnic tension.

The Fulani groups ended the meeting by reiterating their commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and the advancement of young people through education and skills development.
