Amotekun Enhances Security in Ondo State to Combat Kidnapping and Herdsmen Attacks on Farmers

The Ondo State Security Network, known as Amotekun, has intensified efforts to address the rising incidents of kidnapping and attacks on farmers by suspected herdsmen across the state.
In response to these security challenges, the state government has implemented strategic measures to safeguard residents and ensure the safety of agricultural communities.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has directed the formation of the "Amotekun Rangers," a specialized unit within the Amotekun Corps, tasked with patrolling forested areas and border towns vulnerable to criminal activities. These rangers are being deployed to strategic locations, including the Akoko, Ose, and Owo regions, to counteract the influx of criminal elements and provide protection to farming communities.

Since its inception, Amotekun has made significant strides in reducing conflicts between farmers and herders. According to Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the Commander of Amotekun, the establishment of the corps has led to a 95% decrease in such clashes over the past two years. This achievement is attributed to the enforcement of the Ondo State Livestock Rearing and Grazing Regulation and Ranches Establishment Law of 2021, which prohibits underage and night grazing, as well as grazing on major roads and in urban areas.

To further bolster security, the state government has approved the establishment of six new control posts within the state's forests. These posts are strategically located along the borders with Edo, Kogi, Kwara, and Ekiti states. The newly formed Amotekun Rangers will man these posts, focusing on curbing criminal activities and ensuring the safety of residents in these areas.

Amotekun continues to collaborate with other security agencies and community leaders to address security concerns. Recent initiatives include the establishment of security posts in communities experiencing frequent attacks and the deployment of patrol teams to prevent further incidents. The corps remains committed to ensuring that farmers can work without fear and that herders can conduct their activities without infringing upon the rights of others.
