National Security Adviser (NSA) Malam Nuhu Ribadu visited Benue State on April 22, 2025, to commiserate with the people over recent killings and assess the security situation.
The visit follows a series of attacks by suspected herdsmen that resulted in the deaths of over 72 individuals in the Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo local government areas.During his visit, Ribadu condemned the killings as "a tragic evil" and emphasized the federal government's commitment to restoring peace in the region. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the state but noted that Nigeria has managed better than many countries overwhelmed by terrorism and criminality. He stated, "No part of the country is under the political control of criminals," and urged Nigerians to be patient, recognizing that security improvements take time.
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State welcomed Ribadu's visit and reiterated the state's need for federal support in combating insecurity. He highlighted the persistent attacks that have devastated agriculture and displaced communities, leading to the establishment of 17 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. Governor Alia also reported the recent "Black Friday" attack during Easter, which resulted in the loss of 72 lives.
In response, Ribadu pledged the federal government's unwavering support, stating, "We are fully committed to supporting the Governor in tackling insecurity and will continue to stand with him to defeat this menace." He cautioned against politicizing the crisis, urging unity to combat the threat.
The NSA's visit underscores the federal government's dedication to addressing the security challenges in Benue State and restoring peace to the region.
