NIMET Workers Protest at Abuja Airport Over Unpaid Wages and Poor Welfare

Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) staged a protest at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, demanding improved working conditions and the payment of outstanding wages.

The demonstration saw workers chanting slogans such as “No weather, no flight, fly at your own risk,” highlighting the critical role of meteorological services in aviation safety.

The protest was organized by the NIMET Unions Joint Action Committee, which has previously raised concerns about the agency's conditions of service. Workers have reported inadequate allowances, lack of training opportunities, and poor working conditions, particularly within the Aeronautical Meteorology (Aeromet) Unit, which provides essential weather forecasts for aviation safety .

In response to earlier grievances, the Federal Government had settled a 45-month minimum wage arrears owed to NIMET staff, a move praised by the agency's management and workers alike . However, the recent protest indicates that issues regarding staff welfare and working conditions remain unresolved.

The protest has caused disruptions at the airport, with some flights experiencing delays due to the absence of meteorological support. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updated flight information.

The NIMET workers have called for urgent attention to their demands, warning that continued neglect could lead to further industrial actions affecting aviation operations nationwide.
