Governor Babagana Zulum Warns of ISWAP and Boko Haram Threats Amid Border Infiltration

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has raised alarm over the escalating threat posed by Boko Haram and its faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), warning that the porous borders of Nigeria's northeastern region are facilitating the infiltration of terrorists and the proliferation of arms.

In a recent statement, Governor Zulum emphasized the international support these groups are receiving, stating, "ISWAP and Boko Haram are terrorists, getting support internationally... many infiltrated into the country through the Sahel... if the Sahel is not secured, the entire Nigeria will never be secured." He attributed the persistence of insurgency in the northeast to the vulnerability of Nigeria's borders with neighboring countries such as Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. The governor highlighted that arms and light weapons are being smuggled into the country, exacerbating the security challenges .

Governor Zulum's concerns are echoed by security experts who warn that the lack of effective border control and regional cooperation is allowing terrorist groups to regroup and strengthen their operations. The recent resurgence of attacks in Borno State, including the use of advanced tactics like armed drones and roadside explosives by ISWAP, underscores the urgency of addressing these security gaps .

The governor has called for enhanced military presence and regional collaboration to secure the Sahel and prevent further infiltration by terrorist groups. He emphasized that the security of Nigeria's northeastern region is critical to the overall stability of the country, and without securing the Sahel, the entire nation remains at risk.

As the situation continues to evolve, the federal government and neighboring countries are urged to prioritize joint efforts to strengthen border security and combat the growing threat of terrorism in the region.
