A former Nigerian military sniper has alleged that a superior officer attempted to kill him due to his high kill count of Boko Haram insurgents and bandits.
The ex-soldier, who spoke anonymously, stated that the incident occurred during an operation where he was targeted by a fellow soldier. He believes this was a deliberate act orchestrated by his superior, who was displeased with the number of militants he had eliminated. The sniper survived the attack but sustained serious injuries. In a subsequent interview, the former sniper revealed that he resigned from the military due to the hostile environment and lack of support. He emphasized that his decision was influenced by the systemic issues within the military, including corruption and inadequate resources, which hindered effective operations against insurgents.
This account adds to a growing body of testimonies from former military personnel who have highlighted challenges such as insufficient ammunition, inadequate equipment, and internal conflicts within the Nigerian Army. These issues have reportedly compromised the effectiveness of counterinsurgency efforts in regions affected by Boko Haram and banditry.
