EFCC Faces Intense Scrutiny Amidst Bribery Allegations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is under mounting scrutiny following allegations of corruption involving its officers.

Social media influencer Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, has accused EFCC personnel of accepting a N15 million bribe from Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to drop money laundering charges against him.

In a viral audio recording, Bobrisky purportedly discusses the bribery arrangement, claiming that the money was paid to EFCC officials to dismiss the charges. VeryDarkMan released the audio after Bobrisky allegedly failed to repay a N4 million loan borrowed to facilitate the bribe .

The House of Representatives has taken action by summoning EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, Nigerian Correctional Service Comptroller-General Bobrisky, and VeryDarkMan to testify before its committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions. The investigation aims to determine the veracity of the bribery claims and assess the integrity of the involved institutions .

EFCC Chairman Olukoyede has ordered an internal probe into the allegations and invited both Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan to assist in the investigation. The commission has pledged to maintain transparency and uphold its commitment to combating corruption .

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has called for the dismissal and prosecution of any EFCC officials found guilty of involvement in the alleged bribery, emphasizing the need for accountability and the preservation of public trust in anti-corruption efforts .

As the investigation unfolds, the EFCC's reputation and its role in Nigeria's fight against corruption remain at the forefront of public discourse.
