Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that is set to significantly reshape the political landscape of the state.
The defection comes after months of speculation and political maneuvering. Governor Oborevwori, who has been at the helm of Delta State since 2023, has faced increasing pressure from within his party and the opposition. Notably, over 5,000 PDP members, including prominent figures such as Senator Ned Nwoko and Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, recently defected to the APC, citing dissatisfaction with the current administration's performance and internal party dynamics.
In response to these developments, the Delta State chapter of the PDP convened an emergency meeting to address the growing defections and summoned the governor's aides for discussions.
Governor Oborevwori's defection is expected to have significant implications for the 2027 general elections in Delta State. The APC, which has been gaining momentum in the state, now faces the challenge of integrating the governor into its fold amidst internal disagreements. Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, a key APC leader in the state, has previously stated that the party is not welcoming Governor Oborevwori into its ranks.
As the political dynamics in Delta State continue to evolve, all eyes will be on how the APC navigates this new development and how it impacts the party's strategies for the upcoming elections.
