Defections Won’t Shake Us — Saraki Vows to Rebuild PDP with Loyal Members

Former President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has said he remains unshaken by the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting his firm commitment to the party’s revival.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Saraki described the defections as unfortunate but not unexpected, noting that while some individuals may have chosen to leave, there remains a strong core of loyal and committed members ready to reposition the PDP for future success.

“I am not disturbed by the gale of defections. Political realignments are part of democracy,” Saraki said. “What matters now is that we focus on the future. I am committed to working with every loyal party member to rebuild the PDP and prepare it for the challenges ahead.”

Saraki's remarks come amid mounting pressure within the opposition party, following the defection of key figures, including former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move has sparked debate about the party’s internal cohesion and its prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite the turbulence, Saraki urged party members not to lose faith, adding that the PDP has a history of bouncing back from political setbacks.

“We have faced storms before, and we came out stronger. This is not the end of the PDP. In fact, it is an opportunity to cleanse, rebuild, and reconnect with the grassroots,” he added.

Saraki, who played a pivotal role in past political realignments and served as Senate President from 2015 to 2019, is seen as one of the party’s senior statesmen whose influence could be vital in reshaping its future.
