Defection Miracle: How Akpabio, Okowa, Kalu, and Other Politicians Dodged EFCC Probes After Joining APC

In a striking pattern observed across Nigerian politics, several high-profile politicians have reportedly evaded scrutiny by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Critics argue that these defections coincide with the cessation of ongoing investigations, raising questions about the integrity of the nation's anti-corruption efforts.​

Former Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio faced allegations of diverting over ₦100 billion during his tenure. Despite these serious accusations, Akpabio transitioned from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Senate President, a position that has significantly elevated his political standing. Notably, the EFCC has not pursued charges against him, even as investigations into his alleged misconduct remain unresolved .​

Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa was arrested by the EFCC over allegations of misappropriating ₦1.3 trillion in state funds. Following his release, Okowa joined the APC and has since dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. Orji Uzor Kalu, former Governor of Abia State, has faced long-standing allegations of embezzling ₦3.2 billion during his time in office. Despite these charges, Kalu defected from the PDP to the APC.
