Nigerian investigative journalist and political commentator David Hundeyin has sparked fresh controversy in the nation's political discourse by alleging that Omoyele Sowore’s persistent criticism of former presidential candidate Peter Obi stems from jealousy.
In a statement circulating on social media, Hundeyin said, “The only reason Sowore hates and antagonizes Peter Obi is because he's jealous.” He further claimed that Sowore’s long-standing efforts to gain widespread political recognition have repeatedly fallen short, unlike Obi’s rapid ascent in national politics.
“Sowore has been chasing presidential relevance for years with little traction,” Hundeyin wrote. “Then Peter Obi shows up, runs once, and instantly commands overwhelming support. That has to sting.”
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate under the Labour Party, gained unprecedented popularity among Nigerian youths and the urban middle class, with many supporters describing his movement as a political revolution. Sowore, on the other hand, has been an active political figure and pro-democracy activist for decades, known for his work with Sahara Reporters and his multiple presidential bids under the African Action Congress (AAC), though with limited electoral success.
Sowore has often publicly criticized Obi, accusing him of being part of the establishment he claims to oppose. However, Hundeyin’s comment suggests a more personal motive behind the friction — one rooted in envy and perceived political marginalization.
Neither Sowore nor Peter Obi has officially responded to Hundeyin’s remarks as of the time of this report.
The clash underscores deepening divisions within Nigeria’s alternative political movements, even as citizens continue to demand transparency, reform, and unity among opposition voices.
