A tragic incident in Lagos has shocked the nation, after Teejay Opayele, a rising tech star and co-founder of the fast-growing e-commerce platform Bumpa, was killed in a hit-and-run accident allegedly caused by Biola Adams-Odutayo, a wealthy Lagosian.
The incident occurred on March 4, when Teejay was riding his bike home from the gym in Victoria Island, unaware that his journey would tragically end in a horrific crash.According to eyewitness reports, Teejay was riding within his right of way when a car, driven by Biola Adams-Odutayo, collided with him at high speed. The force of the collision knocked him unconscious and left him lying in the street, covered in his own blood. Despite the severity of the situation, Biola reportedly did not attempt to help or check on Teejay's condition.
Rather than stepping out of her car to render assistance, Biola remained inside, allegedly making phone calls and texting her friends. When onlookers urged her to take Teejay to the hospital, Biola’s friends claimed that she was unwilling to do so, reportedly stating, “Biola cannot take him, because she doesn’t want blood stains in her car.”
As the situation escalated, bystanders attempted to assist the critically injured Teejay. Unable to find a car willing to help, they managed to hail an Uber and took him to multiple clinics, only to be turned away by staff at each location. Meanwhile, Biola had reportedly contacted a tow truck to remove her damaged vehicle from the scene. Despite this, it was more than an hour before a group of determined individuals forced her into a Korope (public minibus), insisting she accompany them to a hospital.
Upon arrival at the hospital, however, it was too late. Teejay was declared dead from his injuries. Biola, in an apparent effort to avoid responsibility, reportedly attempted to flee the scene once again but was later apprehended by police. During her arrest, sources claim she boasted that nothing would come of the incident, citing her family's powerful connections.
Shockingly, despite the tragic circumstances, Biola was charged with "traffic violations" rather than manslaughter, prompting widespread outrage. On the same day of her arrest, she was granted bail of 1 million Naira, which she reportedly paid immediately. Biola has since returned to her normal life, while Teejay’s family and the public remain in disbelief over the lack of justice.
Teejay, known for his entrepreneurial success, was a respected figure in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. As the co-founder of Bumpa, he helped secure $4 million in international funding for the startup, which aims to revolutionize the way small businesses engage in e-commerce. Teejay had also founded HostCabal and worked at leading companies in both Nigeria and the United States, earning recognition for his talent and drive.
Now, the family of Teejay and advocates for justice are calling on Nigerians to demand accountability for his untimely death. They believe that the system has failed to deliver justice, and they are appealing for proper legal action to be taken against Biola Adams-Odutayo.
The incident has raised important questions about the power of privilege in the Nigerian legal system and the ability of the wealthy to evade serious consequences for their actions. The public outcry continues to grow, with many calling for stronger laws and harsher penalties for individuals who cause harm and attempt to escape responsibility.
As the family of Teejay mourns the loss of a promising young talent, they vow to continue their fight for justice, hoping that this case will not be swept under the rug and that the voices of ordinary Nigerians will be heard in the pursuit of fairness.
