Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has condemned President Bola Tinubu's recent decision to suspend Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, along with other state officials, describing the move as an "illegality that cannot stand."
Amaechi, a prominent political figure and former Minister of Transportation, made the comments in a statement released to the press, where he expressed his strong opposition to the suspension, which he argued is in violation of Nigeria’s constitution and democratic principles.
"The suspension of Governor Fubara and other elected officials is nothing but an unlawful act that undermines the autonomy of state governments," Amaechi said. "There is no provision in our constitution that allows the president to arbitrarily suspend a sitting governor or any other elected official. This action is unconstitutional and cannot stand."
Amaechi’s statement comes after widespread outcry over the suspension, which many Nigerians view as an unprecedented and disturbing move by the federal government. Critics argue that the decision is politically motivated and infringes on the rights of the people of Rivers State to choose their leadership.
In his remarks, Amaechi emphasized the need for the federal government to respect the separation of powers and the autonomy granted to state governments under Nigeria’s federal structure. He also warned that such actions could set a dangerous precedent, potentially destabilizing the balance of power between the federal and state governments.
"This is not just an attack on Governor Fubara but a direct assault on the democratic rights of the people of Rivers State," Amaechi added. "The federal government must stop undermining the will of the people, and the courts should intervene to restore the rule of law."
The move to suspend Governor Fubara and other state officials has raised alarms among political analysts, legal experts, and citizens, with many calling for immediate clarification and legal action to reverse the suspension.
As the political tensions rise, all eyes are now on the judiciary and legislative bodies to determine the legality of the suspension. Amaechi’s strong opposition signals a deeper political battle, which could have lasting implications for the relationship between the federal government and state governments in Nigeria.
