In the wake of the recent viral videos of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s remarks, which sparked intense debate over the empowerment of Nigerian youth, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has addressed the nation’s youth, offering hope and encouraging them to stay resilient in the face of challenges.
The President also advised his son, Seyi Tinubu, to engage with him directly on the matter of improving youth empowerment in Nigeria. The controversy began a few days ago when videos surfaced of Vice President Shettima allegedly downplaying the struggles of Nigerian youth, which quickly went viral and led to widespread criticism. Many Nigerians, especially young people, voiced their displeasure, accusing the Vice President of failing to acknowledge the difficulties young people face in securing opportunities, jobs, and resources in the country.
In response to the growing concerns, President Tinubu addressed the nation, particularly the youth, in a broadcast, reassuring them that the administration remains committed to their well-being and future prosperity. “I understand the frustrations you may feel, especially as many of you are working hard to make your dreams a reality in a country with numerous challenges,” President Tinubu said.
The President went on to highlight the government’s initiatives aimed at empowering the youth, including various job creation programs, skill development schemes, and entrepreneurship opportunities. He acknowledged that while there is still much work to be done, the government is committed to creating a conducive environment for young people to thrive.
“To the young people of Nigeria, I want you to know that your dreams matter. You are the future of this country, and we are working every day to ensure that you have the tools, opportunities, and platforms to succeed. Stay focused, stay hopeful, and know that this administration is here to help you build the future you deserve,” President Tinubu added.
In his address, President Tinubu also took the opportunity to advise his son, Seyi Tinubu, to have a conversation with him regarding the empowerment of Nigerian youth. Seyi, known for his active role in various philanthropic initiatives, has been a strong advocate for youth engagement and development. The President’s comment emphasized the importance of involving younger generations in the political and economic processes that shape the future of the country.
“Empowering our youth is not just a government responsibility; it is a collective effort that requires collaboration across all sectors,” the President noted. “Seyi, I encourage you to speak with me about how we can do more for our youth. Together, we can create opportunities that will uplift generations to come.”
The President’s remarks have been welcomed by many who are hopeful that the government will take more actionable steps to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s youth, particularly in terms of employment, education, and skills development. His call for dialogue between generations reflects a willingness to bridge the gap between young Nigerians and those in positions of power.
As the conversation around youth empowerment continues, all eyes will be on the government's next steps, particularly in terms of concrete policies and initiatives aimed at providing long-term solutions to the issues raised by the viral videos. The President’s address has reignited hope among the youth, giving them a renewed sense of purpose and belief in the possibility of a brighter future.
