Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly criticized two major projects under the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling them wasteful and corrupt. In his new book, ‘Nigeria: Past and Future,’ released to mark his 88th birthday, Obasanjo took aim at the N15.6 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway project, labeling it a waste of resources and accusing it of being fraught with corruption.
Obasanjo, in a candid assessment of Nigeria’s political landscape, also criticized the President’s administration for the allocation of N21 billion towards the construction of a new official residence for Vice President Kashim Shettima. The former leader described the project as a "misplaced priority" and a "conduit designed to embezzle public funds."
In Chapter 6 of the book, which highlights the leadership styles and governance records of both federal and state executives, Obasanjo expressed deep concern over what he described as the misuse of public funds under the current administration. He accused leaders of prioritizing extravagant projects over the critical needs of the Nigerian people, including infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
The unveiling of ‘Nigeria: Past and Future’ has already stirred significant debate among political and public circles, with many highlighting Obasanjo’s sharp critique of the administration. The former president, known for his outspoken nature, continues to play a prominent role in Nigerian politics, often challenging the status quo in his public statements.
Obasanjo’s remarks regarding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway, a major infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity between southern and southeastern Nigeria, have raised questions about the project’s feasibility and long-term impact on the Nigerian economy. Similarly, his comments about the Vice President’s official residence have fueled discussions on the prioritization of government spending.
The book’s release has added to the growing conversation on the future of Nigeria’s leadership and governance, as Obasanjo’s critiques continue to resonate with both supporters and critics of the current administration.
