A Nigerian man has voiced his frustration over the soaring rent prices in Enugu, questioning why it is now more expensive to rent in the Coal City than in Lagos, one of the country’s busiest metropolitan areas.
In a passionate outburst shared on social media, the man expressed disbelief at the exorbitant charges attached to a one-bedroom apartment in Enugu, calling it a “daylight robbery laced with madness.”According to his post, a tenant seeking to rent a one-bedroom apartment for 800,000 Naira in Enugu would be hit with an additional 770,000 Naira in hidden charges. The sharp rise in costs has left many Nigerians in shock, as they try to make sense of the pricing.
"Why is rent in Enugu now higher than Lagos?" he asked. "How can 800,000 Naira rent come with a whopping 770,000 Naira in charges? What is going on in that city? This is madness!" His lamentation reflects a growing concern among residents and potential tenants who are feeling the strain of unaffordable housing costs in the southeastern region.
The post has sparked a wave of responses from fellow Nigerians, many expressing sympathy for the people currently living in Enugu, as well as a call for regulation of housing prices in the city. Many questioned the rationale behind such inflated costs in a city that is not considered as heavily commercialized as Lagos, where the cost of living has historically been higher due to its economic activities.
“I feel sorry for the people who have to live there now,” the man concluded. “How do they even manage to survive these inflated costs?”
With housing prices continuing to rise across many Nigerian cities, this public outcry could spark much-needed conversations about rent regulation and the protection of tenants from exploitative practices in the Nigerian real estate sector.
