In a bold move aimed at curbing what they describe as the harmful effects of online pornography, the Nigerian House of Representatives has issued a directive to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), demanding the immediate shutdown of all pornographic websites operating in the country.
The decision, which was passed during a session on March 12, 2025, comes as part of a wider effort to address what lawmakers call a growing moral crisis fueled by easy access to explicit content on the internet. The directive was issued after heated discussions regarding the negative impact of such content on Nigerian society, particularly among the youth.
The motion to shut down these websites was introduced by Representative Ibrahim Lawal, who argued that the proliferation of adult content on the internet is a threat to public decency and a destabilizing force within Nigerian communities. Lawal stated that the unchecked access to pornography has led to increasing cases of addiction, sexual exploitation, and other social vices.
“The pervasive spread of pornography undermines the values that are central to our society,” Lawal said during his presentation. “It is time we take concrete steps to protect our children and families from this growing menace.”
Following the passage of the motion, the NCC, Nigeria’s regulatory authority for communications, is expected to act promptly. The commission has been tasked with ensuring the complete blockage of all adult websites and the enforcement of stringent regulations against online platforms distributing explicit content.
NCC officials have expressed their commitment to collaborating with internet service providers (ISPs) to implement the shutdown swiftly. However, questions remain regarding the practicality and potential challenges of enforcing such a broad order across the entire country, particularly given the rise of VPNs and other workarounds used by internet users to bypass restrictions.
