The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested an Indian woman at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport for attempting to smuggle 72 parcels of heroin into the country.
The drugs, which were cleverly concealed in her luggage, were discovered during a routine security check at the airport.According to NDLEA officials, the woman, identified as a 34-year-old Indian national, was apprehended after agents noticed suspicious activity and inconsistencies in her travel documents. Upon further inspection, authorities uncovered the 72 parcels of heroin, which weighed approximately 7 kilograms.
The drugs were carefully packed inside various compartments within the woman’s luggage, disguised to avoid detection. The NDLEA’s swift intervention prevented a significant quantity of the illegal substance from entering the Nigerian market.
Speaking to the press, an NDLEA spokesperson confirmed the arrest, noting that the agency is committed to curbing drug trafficking and preventing the spread of narcotics across Nigeria. "This is a major victory in our fight against drug trafficking. The arrest of this individual and the seizure of such a large quantity of heroin demonstrates the vigilance and determination of our officers at Kano airport," said the spokesperson.
The Indian woman is currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing. NDLEA officials have stated that they will cooperate with international law enforcement agencies to trace the origin of the drugs and any possible connections to organized trafficking networks.
This arrest comes at a time when the NDLEA has been ramping up its efforts to combat drug trafficking, particularly at airports and border posts, which remain critical points of entry for illegal substances. The agency has also increased its public awareness campaigns on the dangers of drug abuse, which continues to be a major concern in various parts of Nigeria.
The NDLEA has pledged to continue its robust efforts to keep Nigerian borders safe from the trafficking of illicit drugs, and authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.
