Former Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has praised the G5 Governors, describing them as an "aggregation of like minds" committed to a common purpose in Nigerian politics.
The G5 Governors, also known as the Integrity Group, are a coalition of five prominent governors, including Ikpeazu, from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who challenged the leadership of the party ahead of the 2023 presidential election. The group, which also includes Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo), played a crucial role in the political landscape during the elections, advocating for a shift in the party's direction and leadership.
Speaking about the group, Ikpeazu stated, “The G5 Governors were not just a political group; they were an aggregation of like minds—people who saw the need for a change in our political structure and the leadership of the party. We shared common values, and our actions were guided by the belief that Nigerian politics needed to be more inclusive and transparent.”
Ikpeazu further explained that the G5 Governors were united by their commitment to the principles of justice, fairness, and the empowerment of the people, rather than personal ambition or power. "We were motivated by the desire to ensure that Nigeria's political environment is one where every voice matters, and every part of the country feels represented," he added.
The formation of the G5 Governors was seen as a significant moment in Nigerian politics, as the group defied the leadership of the PDP in an effort to push for the zoning of the presidency and greater consideration for regional balance. Despite the challenges they faced within the party, the G5 Governors maintained their stance and became key players in the 2023 political drama.
Ikpeazu’s comments reinforce the narrative of a united front among the G5 Governors, and many are speculating on their future role in the country's political landscape. The group’s influence is still being felt as they continue to shape discussions about the direction of the PDP and the future of Nigerian politics.
As Nigeria looks ahead to the 2027 elections, the G5 Governors remain a relevant force, with Ikpeazu's recent remarks reaffirming their continued commitment to shaping the nation's political future through collective action and shared ideals.
