Senator Natasha Files N100 Billion Sexual Harassment Suit Against Senate President Akpabio

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a N100 billion lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of sexual harassment.

The lawsuit, which has garnered widespread attention, alleges that Akpabio made inappropriate advances toward the senator, creating a hostile work environment and violating her rights.

In a statement released by her legal team, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, detailed the nature of the alleged harassment and the emotional distress she claims to have suffered as a result. According to the legal documents, the senator accuses Akpabio of making unwelcome sexual advances and using his position of power to intimidate and harass her.

“I have endured several months of harassment, and it has affected my ability to perform my duties as a senator,” Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan said in her statement. "This suit is not just about me. It is about ensuring that no woman is ever subjected to such treatment in the workplace or anywhere else."

The N100 billion suit seeks compensation for emotional distress, damage to her reputation, and the broader impact on her political career. The senator’s legal team has also called for a thorough investigation into the allegations, urging the Senate to take appropriate action.

Senate President Akpabio has yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit. However, his spokesperson has indicated that the allegations are being taken seriously, and the Senate leadership will issue a formal response once they have reviewed the claims.

The suit has sparked a significant conversation across political and social circles in Nigeria, with many expressing support for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's decision to take legal action. Women’s rights groups, in particular, have praised the senator for speaking out, noting that the case highlights the ongoing issue of sexual harassment in Nigerian politics and public offices.

“This is a significant moment for women in politics and public service in Nigeria,” said Ngozi Eze, a spokesperson for a women’s advocacy group. "It’s crucial that those in positions of power are held accountable for their actions, and that women are given the respect and dignity they deserve in the workplace."

As the case progresses, it is expected to attract further attention, raising important questions about sexual harassment, power dynamics, and accountability within Nigeria’s political system.
