In a recent development surrounding the trial of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Judge Rahman Oshodi has refused to step down from the case despite allegations of bias made by Emefiele’s legal counsel.
The trial involves allegations of a massive fraud, including the misappropriation of $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion.Emefiele’s legal team had requested that Judge Oshodi recuse himself from the trial, citing claims of bias and impartiality in the handling of the case. The defense argued that certain actions and statements by the judge during the proceedings had raised concerns about his ability to deliver a fair trial. This request, however, was promptly rejected by the judge, who insisted that he had conducted the trial impartially and in accordance with the law.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting Emefiele, has also backed the judge, asserting that there is no evidence to suggest any wrongdoing or bias on Oshodi’s part. EFCC officials stated that Judge Oshodi has maintained professionalism throughout the trial and emphasized that the legal process must continue without delay.
"The allegations of bias are without merit. The judge has performed his duties with the utmost integrity and has done nothing wrong. We remain confident that justice will be served," said an EFCC spokesperson.
Emefiele’s case has garnered significant attention due to the scale of the alleged fraud, which has raised concerns about the state of financial governance in the country. As the trial continues, the tensions between the defense and the EFCC, along with the controversy surrounding the judge’s role, have added further complexity to the proceedings.
