A former minister has sharply criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of publicly humiliating female senators, particularly Senator Kingibe and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The former minister, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, described Akpabio's actions as "shameful" and "disrespectful," particularly in a time when women are striving for equal representation and respect in the Nigerian political space."Akpabio's treatment of female senators like Kingibe and Natasha is nothing short of disgraceful," the former minister said. "It’s a reflection of his deep disrespect for women, and it should not be tolerated in the leadership of our esteemed Senate."
The remarks come in the wake of growing tensions within the Senate and ongoing public criticism of Akpabio's handling of leadership matters. The former minister added that Akpabio's rise to the position of Senate President was facilitated by what he described as a "corrupt judiciary," implying that the Senate President's position was secured through manipulative and unethical practices rather than genuine merit or democratic support.
"He would not be where he is today if not for the corrupt and compromised judiciary that helped him ascend to the position of Senate President," the former minister asserted. "His leadership is tainted, and his actions against female senators are a reflection of his lack of respect for democratic values and the rule of law."
The criticism is part of a broader backlash against Akpabio, with many accusing him of disregarding the rights of women and undermining their contributions to Nigerian politics. This latest round of condemnation follows the recent N100 billion sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Akpabio, which has further fueled public discourse around his leadership.
Women’s rights advocates have echoed the concerns raised by the former minister, calling for an immediate investigation into Akpabio’s actions and for measures to be put in place to prevent the further marginalization of women in political spaces.
"Akpabio’s actions are an affront to the values of fairness, justice, and respect for women," said a representative from the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA). "We demand that he be held accountable for his actions and that the dignity of female senators is upheld at all times."
As the political climate continues to heat up, many are now questioning the integrity of Nigeria’s political leadership, with some calling for a more thorough examination of how power is acquired and exercised in the nation’s highest legislative body.
