Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abuja Zonal Directorate, have arrested 59 suspected internet fraudsters in a major operation on Monday, February 24, 2025.
The arrests took place along Abacha Road, Mararaba axis in Nasarawa State, following credible intelligence about their involvement in fraudulent internet activities.According to the EFCC, the suspects were apprehended based on information that linked them to various forms of online scams, including romance and investment fraud, which have become rampant across Nigeria. The operation was part of the commission's ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and other internet-related financial crimes that have been causing significant harm to individuals and businesses both locally and internationally.
During the arrest, EFCC operatives recovered a total of 73 phones of different brands, which are believed to be tools used by the suspects for their fraudulent activities. The phones, along with other devices and items seized, will be thoroughly examined as part of the investigation process.
The suspects, whose identities have not been disclosed, are currently being interrogated, and the EFCC has assured that they will be charged to court once investigations are concluded. The commission has made it clear that the crackdown on internet fraudsters will continue, with a focus on disrupting the operations of individuals and syndicates engaged in cybercrimes.
This operation highlights the EFCC's commitment to curbing internet fraud, which has seen a rise in recent years, particularly with the growth of social media platforms and online businesses. The commission has warned that it will not relent in its efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and protect the integrity of Nigeria’s financial system.
The arrested suspects will now face prosecution, and the EFCC has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspected internet fraud activities to the relevant authorities. The EFCC's recent action serves as a reminder that cybercrime is a serious offense with severe legal consequences, and the commission remains determined to clamp down on those who engage in such illicit activities.
