Critics Slam IBB’s Autobiography as ‘Boring and Full of Empty Words’

Former Nigerian military leader General Ibrahim Babangida’s much-anticipated autobiography has come under heavy criticism, with some reviewers calling it a “complete waste of 369 pages.”

The book, which was expected to provide insights into Babangida’s years as Nigeria’s military ruler, has failed to live up to the expectations of many readers, with critics labeling it as a meandering collection of vague statements and half-answers.

One such critic, a prominent Nigerian commentator, has warned potential buyers to “save their N50,000 or look for a free PDF copy instead.” According to the review, the book is “full of words but says absolutely nothing.” The critic describes Babangida’s narrative style as mealy-mouthed and double-tongued, offering no concrete answers to the pressing questions surrounding his controversial time in power, including the infamous annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.

Rather than shedding light on the pivotal moments of his leadership, the autobiography reportedly skirts around key events, providing little more than deflections and vague justifications. The book is said to lack the depth and clarity that readers expected from a figure as significant in Nigeria’s history as Babangida.

“This book is IBB trying to do the ‘Maradona’ thing again,” the reviewer writes, drawing a comparison to the famous footballer Diego Maradona. “But this version of Maradona is a boring 83-year-old in a wheelchair who still thinks he can outscore Mbappé.”

The sharp criticisms have ignited a broader debate about the former leader’s attempt to control his legacy. With no direct answers to the most pressing questions of his regime, many readers feel the autobiography is an exercise in self-preservation rather than a genuine effort to come clean about his role in Nigeria’s political history.

Despite the backlash, some readers continue to praise the book for its potential as a historical document. However, the overwhelming sentiment seems to be that Babangida missed an opportunity to truly engage with Nigeria's painful past and provide the clarity many Nigerians have been waiting for.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the book will have any lasting impact or if it will be quickly relegated to the archives as another attempt by a former leader to shape their narrative, while leaving many questions unanswered.
