P.O. Donates N50 Million to University on the Niger and N10 Million to School of Nursing in Umunya

In a strong demonstration of his commitment to fostering development in critical sectors, Peter Obi , a prominent Nigerian philanthropist and advocate for national growth, made significant financial contributions to two key institutions on Thursday, emphasizing his ongoing dedication to the advancement of health, education, and poverty reduction in Nigeria.

Obi visited the University on the Niger (UNINIGER), located in Umunya, where he made a generous donation of N50 million to the university’s take-off campus at Iyi-Enu. His contribution is part of his broader initiative to address the country’s challenges in the education sector, which he believes are vital to the country's long-term development.

Following his visit to the university, P.O. also visited the School of Nursing at Iyienu Mission Hospital in Ogidi, where he made an additional donation of N10 million. This move underscores his belief that improving Nigeria's healthcare system, especially in the training and equipping of health professionals, is crucial for the nation’s future.

In a statement following the visits, P.O. shared his thoughts on the importance of these investments: “I have consistently emphasised that the financial support we give to health, education, and poverty reduction initiatives is not expenditure, but an investment in crucial areas that will propel our development.”

P.O. went on to highlight the ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s health and education sectors, which continue to suffer from neglect and insufficient government attention. He pointed out that the health sector, in particular, faces serious issues, including a lack of funding, inadequate infrastructure, and the non-transparent execution of health projects.

“The health sector is burdened by funding gaps, infrastructure deficits, and non-transparent execution of health projects. There is also a critical shortage of healthcare professionals. We currently face a significant shortfall in the number of doctors and nurses, which is far below the World Health Organization’s recommendations,” P.O. stated.

He added that the solution to this growing crisis lies in significantly boosting investments in the training of healthcare professionals across the country, ensuring that future generations are better equipped to serve the health needs of Nigerians.

“We must invest more aggressively in the training of healthcare professionals nationwide,” P.O. said. “These are the people who will shape the future of our healthcare system, and we must equip them with the tools and education they need to succeed.”

P.O. expressed his confidence that these investments would lay a solid foundation for Nigeria’s future, with the potential to significantly improve the country’s health and education outcomes. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Proprietor, Management, Staff, and Students of both the University on the Niger and the School of Nursing for their tireless work in advancing education and healthcare.

“We must not view these contributions as charity, but as critical investments in the development of our nation,” P.O. said. “I remain deeply convinced that a New Nigeria is possible, and it starts with each of us taking responsibility and making the investments that will transform our country.”

The donations are part of a larger initiative by P.O. to foster sustainable development in the country, particularly in the sectors of education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. His efforts have been widely recognized, and many see him as a key figure in the movement for a better, more equitable Nigeria.
