A group of law students from Abia State University (ABSU) has issued a formal appeal to the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, over a recent directive that mandates law students to relocate from the university's campus in Umuahia, the state capital, to the main campus in Uturu.
The letter, shared widely on social media with the hashtag #SaveABSUStudents, expresses the students' grievances regarding the logistics and financial burden caused by the relocation. The students have urged Governor Otti to reconsider the decision, citing significant difficulties that they believe will negatively impact their academic performance and personal well-being.
"We, the law students of Abia State University, use this medium to express our grievance regarding your order on the relocation of law students from Umuahia to Uturu. Kindly look into this matter and grant our appeal," the letter reads. The students have requested that the governor revisit the decision and explore alternative solutions that will not disrupt their education or financial stability.
According to the students, the relocation would force many to either find new accommodation in Uturu, an area that is farther from the capital city, or face the daily commute from Umuahia to Uturu, which is approximately 45 kilometers (about 28 miles) each way. The students argue that this will add significant stress and cost to their already demanding academic schedules.
The university's law program is one of the most respected in the region, and many of the affected students are concerned that this move could hinder their focus on their studies due to increased transportation costs, the need to secure new housing, and the logistical challenges of managing their academic commitments in a new environment.
Governor Alex Otti, who has made efforts to improve infrastructure and education within the state since taking office, has yet to issue an official response to the students' petition. However, his administration has been praised for taking steps to revitalize Abia’s educational sector, which some students hope might lead to a swift resolution of this matter.
In their appeal, the students have proposed a number of alternatives to the relocation order, including the option to establish a hybrid model of study, allowing some courses to be held in Umuahia, while key sessions and practical training could continue in Uturu. They are also calling for further consultations with student representatives and the university management to find a mutually beneficial solution.
As the matter continues to unfold, students from Abia State University are rallying together to ensure their voices are heard. Many are hopeful that Governor Otti will consider the impact of this decision on their academic futures and will take steps to address their concerns.
For now, the students remain hopeful for a positive outcome and are calling for swift action from the state government to alleviate the challenges posed by the proposed relocation.
