Okada-Snatching Robber dies while trying to escape arrest in Ogun

An armed robber who specializes in robbing and dispossessing commercial motorcyclists popularly known as ‘Okada riders’ of their motorcycles has died in an accident while trying to evade arrest after shooting at a victim and snatching his motorcycle at Abule Ijaiye area of Lefenwa, Ogun State.


A statement by the state police command public relations officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, says the suspect was fleeing from arrest when he fell into a ditch, hitting his head on a concrete culvert and died instantly.

“A motorcycle robber met his Waterloo on Saturday, 28th of April, 2018, when he snatched a motorcycle and shot the owner, Toyin Ayoade, at Abule Ijaye area of Lafenwa in Abeokuta at about 4:45 pm. While Toyin was struggling with him, he shot him on the hand and took possession of the motorcycle,” the statement read
The statement added that an alarm raised by the victim attracted residents of the area. The suspect was given a hot pursuit and in a desperate attempt to escape arrest, the robber fell into a ditch and hit his head on a concrete culvert and died on the spot. Items recovered from him include one locally made double barrel pistol, two live cartridges and the snatched motorcycle.

“The victim has been taken to the hospital by the DPO Lafenwa division SP Mohammed Odunlami and he is responding to treatment,” the statement added
