Femi Kuti Reacts to Wizkid’s Comment on Fela Anikulapo-Kuti

Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding a statement credited to Wizkid, in which the singer reportedly said he is greater than Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Speaking on the issue, Femi Kuti expressed surprise at Wizkid’s decision to respond to comments made by activist Seun Kuti, questioning whether the award-winning singer genuinely believes such a claim.

“When Wizkid decided to answer Seun and he said he is greater than Fela, what should I say? My own question is — does he really feel that?” Femi Kuti said.

The Afrobeat legend’s son noted that while artistic confidence is expected in the music industry, Fela’s legacy occupies a unique and almost untouchable place in African and global music history.

Femi Kuti further suggested that many of today’s top Nigerian artistes would likely avoid making statements that place them above the late icon, out of respect for his influence and contribution to music and activism.

“These artistes Burna Boy, Davido I don’t think personally they will say anything against a Fela,” he added.

His comments have sparked fresh conversations online about legacy, influence, and generational respect within the Nigerian music industry, with fans and commentators divided between defending artistic self-belief and upholding reverence for cultural pioneers.

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti remains widely regarded as the father of Afrobeat, celebrated not only for his music but also for his fearless activism and global impact, a legacy many believe transcends comparisons with contemporary artistes.
