Abia State Governor Alex Otti Signs Senior Citizens Bill Into Law

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has signed the Senior Citizens Bill into law, introducing a new social welfare framework aimed at supporting elderly residents across the state.

Under the new law, any Abia State citizen aged 60 years and above will be entitled to a range of benefits, including a free monthly stipend, free medical care, and other welfare support designed to improve quality of life for senior citizens. The benefits are expected to continue for qualified individuals for the rest of their lives.

According to state officials, the legislation is part of the administration’s broader social protection agenda, focused on strengthening care for vulnerable groups and recognizing the contributions of older citizens to the development of the state.

Government sources say the program will include registration and verification processes to ensure that only eligible residents benefit from the scheme, with implementation guidelines to be released by the relevant ministries and agencies.

The move has already drawn praise from many residents and advocacy groups for the elderly, who describe the law as a landmark step in institutionalizing social support for senior citizens at the state level. Observers say successful rollout and transparent funding will be key to sustaining the initiative long term.
