NDLEA Arrests Two Brothers with 5kg of Cocaine, Nabs Ghanaian-British Student with 19.4kg of Cannabis at Lagos Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant arrests at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, seizing large quantities of illegal drugs and apprehending the suspects involved in the illicit trafficking.

On Thursday, April 3, 2025, NDLEA operatives arrested John Abugu (43) and Kenneth Abugu (31), two brothers, for attempting to smuggle 5kg of cocaine to India. The drugs were carefully concealed in the walls of their suitcases, making it difficult to detect. The suspects, who had initially claimed they were traveling for medical treatment, were caught following credible intelligence gathered by the agency.

NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest, stating, “The brothers attempted to use the international airport as a route for trafficking narcotics, but thanks to our vigilant officers, their plan was foiled."

In another operation on the same day, a 20-year-old Ghanaian-British student, Parker Darren Hazekia Osei, was apprehended with a staggering 19.4kg of Loud – a potent strain of cannabis. Osei, who identified himself as a Computer Science student at East London University, was arrested during the inward clearance of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that had arrived from Bangkok, Thailand.

The drugs, concealed in a large traveling bag, were reportedly meant for delivery in Nigeria. Osei, upon questioning, admitted to having traveled to Bangkok specifically to pick up the drugs, which were intended to be smuggled into Nigeria.

“This is a significant seizure and arrest. We are working relentlessly to intercept narcotics and ensure that traffickers are held accountable for their actions,” said Babafemi.

The NDLEA has vowed to continue its fight against drug trafficking and has urged travelers to be cautious and report any suspicious activities at the airport. The suspects are currently in custody and will face charges under Nigeria’s strict drug trafficking laws.

These arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of the NDLEA to curb drug smuggling and keep Nigeria safe from the dangers of illegal narcotics.
