The Iwhuruohna Progressive Organisation (IPO) has reiterated its stance on the identity of the Ikwerre people, following recent comments made by the late Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and members of Ohaneze Ndigbo. In a statement, the IPO urged individuals and groups to refrain from referring to Ikwerre as "Ibo," emphasizing the distinct cultural and ethnic identity of the Ikwerre people.
The IPO's warning comes in light of ongoing discussions surrounding the representation of various ethnic groups within the Southeast region. The organization expressed concern over what it termed "expansionist narratives" and has now directed its message towards Uche Okwukwu and others who share similar views.
In a statement, the IPO underscored the importance of respecting the unique heritage of the Ikwerre, stating, “We educate our fellow citizens on the rich history and distinct identity of our people. Mischaracterizing our identity undermines our cultural heritage and unity.”
The comments have sparked conversations across social media, with many supporting the IPO's call for recognition and respect for the Ikwerre identity. As discussions continue, the organization remains firm in its commitment to promoting awareness and fostering unity among all ethnic groups in the region.
